Today, the organizational space forces are part of the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation and perform tasks as part of the military units of the Plesetsk cosmodrome, the 15th Army of the Aerospace Forces (special purpose), the Main Test Space Center named after Herman Titov, the Main Missile Warning Center attack, the Main Center for Space Situation Intelligence. The training of professional officers for the Space Forces is carried out by the A.F. Mozhaisky Military Space Academy.
At present, the space forces have created and are operating an effective preparation, launch and control of domestic spacecraft for various purposes, orbital and radar control of missile-hazardous areas, as well as ensuring global monitoring of the space situation.
Military personnel and civilian personnel successfully solve the problems of using and building up the combat capabilities of missile attack warning systems, space control, replenishment and control of an orbital group of information systems and military and dual-use complexes, education and training of future officers.
As part of their combat duty to ensure control of outer space in 2021, specialists of the Main Center for Space Situation Intelligence of the Space Forces of the Aerospace Forces carried out more than 3.5 thousand special works to control changes in the space situation, during which they discovered and accepted about 1,700 space objects for escort, carried out control over the launch of more than 1,450 spacecraft into orbit, provided forecasting and control over the termination of ballistic existence of about 270 space objects, issued 15 warnings about dangerous approaches of space objects with spacecraft of the Russian orbital group.
Special attention by the specialists of the Main Center for Space Situation Reconnaissance was paid to monitoring the composition and state of orbital groupings of foreign space systems, as well as conducting experiments in orbits with spacecraft of foreign countries.
During the current year, more than 110 launches of foreign and domestic ballistic missiles and space missiles were detected by the duty means of the Russian missile attack warning system, specialized means of space control and anti-missile defense systems.
The combat crews of the Plesetsk State Test Cosmodrome carried out 4 launches of Soyuz-2 class space rockets with military spacecraft and 1 launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
Specialists of the G.S. Titov Main Testing Space Center ensured 15 launches of space rockets from the Plesetsk, Vostochny and Baikonur cosmodrome, with the launch of 258 domestic and foreign spacecraft into orbit.
This year, the duty forces of the ground-based automated command and control complex of the space forces conducted over 520 thousand sessions of controlling spacecraft of the Russian orbital group.
In addition, in the course of carrying out combat duty tasks, the duty forces performed over 83 thousand sessions of providing control of spacecraft for 93 spacecraft.
The troops are actively working on the commissioning of the latest weapons, military and special equipment. The radar stations of the new generation “Voronezh” of the missile attack warning systems, created according to the technology of high factory readiness in the Leningrad, Kaliningrad, Irkutsk, Orenburg regions, in the Altai, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk territories, are on alert.
Work continues on the creation of new radar stations for the missile attack warning system in the Komi Republic and the Murmansk region.
As part of the implementation of the program for the improvement and development of the Russian space control system, the space forces continue to work on the creation of specialized ground-based space control systems of a new generation. By 2025, it is planned to deploy more than 12 new laser-optical and radio-technical complexes on the territory of Russia, implementing various principles of detection and recognition of space objects. The first laser-optical complex of a new generation successfully fulfills the tasks of combat duty for the control of outer space on the territory of the Altai Territory.
Currently, the military units of the Main Testing Space Center operate more than 300 modern and modernized spacecraft control facilities.
In addition, a new generation of command and measurement systems is being actively developed to re-equip individual command and measurement complexes of the G.S. Titov Main Testing Space Center. The commissioning of unified command and measurement means will make it possible to switch to new control technologies for spacecraft of the Russian orbital group and to reduce several times the list of modifications of technical control means of previous generations.
In general, to re-equip formations and military units of the space forces with promising weapons, about 50 experimental design and research works are currently underway to create systems and complexes of a new generation in the coming years.
The Space Forces of the Russian Aerospace Forces solve a wide range of tasks, the main of which are:
monitoring space objects and identifying threats to Russia in space and from space;
providing the top echelons of control with reliable information on the detection of ballistic missile launches and warning of a missile attack;
implementation of spacecraft launches, control and maintenance in the established composition and readiness for the use of military and dual (military and civil) satellite systems and their launch vehicles.
