The events of the All-Russian action “Roads of Redemption” continue in the Novgorod Region. The propaganda brigade of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia visited IK-7 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Novgorod Region, where the film of the Center for Public Relations of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia “Tobolsk Dostoevsky’s Gate” and lectures on the history of the penitentiary system were shown for employees of the institution, veterans, and members of the public.

As Elena Oludina, head of the Campaign’s propaganda team, noted, one of the main goals of the Campaign is to strengthen cooperation between the territorial bodies of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia and civil society institutions, as well as cultural institutions – libraries, museums, theaters.

In addition, the convicts of IK-7 also took an active part in the action. On Friday, October 1, in IK-7 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Novgorod Region, the premiere of the play “The House of the Dead” based on the story “Notes from the House of the Dead” by F.M. Dostoevsky.

This is a joint project of the Federal Penitentiary Service and the Ministry of Culture of the Novgorod Region. The author of the idea and the director is Daniil Donchenko.

Convicts IK-7 are involved in the performance. The main idea of the performance was the search for at least a grain of decency, truthfulness even in the most lost soul of the killer. According to the plot of the production, a dead house is a cage in which sinners are locked. Once in this environment, the modest and intelligent Alexander Goryanchikov becomes a listener to frank and cruel stories about hatred, fraud, and murder. Moreover, it is not the crime itself that is important, but how a person realizes it. Gradually, the convicts surrounding the protagonist begin to show complex and ambiguous emotions, many are tormented by conscience.

The rehearsals lasted for several months. It should be noted that the involvement of persons serving sentences in correctional colonies in the process of creating a performance will help strengthen their civic identity, contribute to their social rehabilitation through theatrical art.

The project of staging the play “House of the Dead” is one of the winners of the first grant competition of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives. The performance became one of the events of the Federal Penitentiary Service dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of F.M. Dostoevsky. As part of the celebration of the anniversary, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia takes part in the All-Russian action “The Roads of Redemption” and organizes a motor rally along the route Moscow – St. Petersburg – Veliky Novgorod – Staraya Russa – Pskov.
