A working group of 16 experts, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, has completed the selection of research centers that will receive grant support under the federal project “Artificial Intelligence”.

“Today, applications for grants of up to 1 billion rubles were selected within the framework of the federal project“ Artificial Intelligence ”for the creation of six AI research centers in the country until 2024. The total amount of funds, taking into account extra-budgetary funding, will amount to 7 billion rubles. This is an extremely significant amount of funding even for large universities and research organizations and, as a result, it is a great responsibility for the result. These six centers will become the reference points for the development of AI technology. They should not only help the rest of the participants to pull themselves up and pump themselves in the conditions of the new competition, but also provide Russia with a leading position in the world in the development of AI technology, ”Dmitry Chernyshenko noted in his speech.

On behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister, the Analytical Center under the Government of Russia formed an Expert Council, which considered the applications received for the competition. A total of 36 organizations took part in the selection, of which nine were shortlisted. The working group has identified the best six projects of the centers out of nine.

“Evaluation of projects was carried out without bias, active discussion was going on up to the moment of voting. But our main task was to select those applications that have a chance for maximum development and will give concrete results, ”stressed Dmitry Chernyshenko.

“We need technology creation centers to take Russia from the 20th place in the world to a leading position. The guarantee that the centers are doing the right thing is their industrial partners: they will invest a total of 1.6 billion rubles in the work of the centers, ”said Vladislav Fedulov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, who oversees the work of the Expert Council.

The most popular areas for the development of artificial intelligence, for which applications were received, are cross-industry AI and AI technologies for various sectors of the economy, AI for optimizing management decisions, AI for medicine, AI for industry.

Following the meeting, the members of the working group voted for the strongest, in their opinion, applications. According to the results of the voting, the winners were determined: Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, MIPT, Institute for System Programming. V.P. Ivannikova, Innopolis University, ITMO, HSE.
