Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko awarded the winners of the International Student Programming Championship ICPC. The final of the competition was held in Moscow, at the site of the Central Manege, on October 5.
The team from Lobachevsky University, Nizhny Novgorod became the absolute champion. The gold was won by the students of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the St. Petersburg students of ITMO University, and the bronze – by the team of the National University Higher School of Economics.
Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that the International Student Programming Championship has become the main international event in the IT sphere.
“119 teams fought for the victory, and the jury chose the best. Russia has won the championship for eight years in a row. And today we are proud that the cup will remain in Russia, with the team from Nizhny Novgorod, ”noted Dmitry Chernyshenko.
“Every year the championship gathers more participants than the Olympic Games, so the winners can be safely called digital Olympic champions. This year, more than 60 thousand students from 115 countries of the world took part in the qualifying tournaments. Only 350 representatives from more than 40 countries reached the final. This proves once again that each of those present in the hall has come a long thorny path, consisting of hundreds of hours of preparation, thousands of lines of code and daily challenges, – said Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. – Russian student teams won three sets of medals. One of the gold medals was won by the team of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, the second gold – by ITMO University, and one bronze medal – by the National University Higher School of Economics, ”said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
Moscow hosted the ICPC final for the first time. In addition to the competitions themselves and the cultural program, an open business program was held in the Central Manege, within the framework of which representatives of Russian and foreign companies spoke.
“It is important for us that this year Moscow has become a platform where the best young developers from all over the world met. For the Russian capital, IT is one of the main sectors of the economy and a real tool for city management. I am sure that all the participants in the final are future IT leaders who will have to create new digital services for millions of users both in large corporations and in their own companies and startups. We did our best to ensure that the ICPC final was held at a high organizational level, as comfortable as possible for the participants. At the same time, a cultural program was organized for the finalists so that the children remember not only interesting tasks and competition, but also Moscow – the IT capital of Russia and one of the most modern cities in the world, ”said Natalya Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow.
The Deputy Prime Minister added that Russian President Vladimir Putin has set the task of ensuring digitalization of 10 main sectors of the economy, which cannot be solved without a team of strong professionals in the IT field.
Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation Maxim Parshin emphasized: “During this time, Russian teams have become absolute world champions 14 times, having won a total of 80 sets of medals, of which 33 are gold. And today we again witness the victory of the Russian teams with pride and joy. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of the championship for the development of information technology, for the programming community. The Championship gave Russia outstanding programmers, and today we are confident that we are facing the future IT stars ”.
“Today the participants of the championship have become part of this team! In September, we adopted the second package of measures to support the IT industry, which, in particular, is aimed at strengthening human resources. It includes measures to create conditions for attracting and returning our talented IT specialists from abroad. We plan to simplify the procedures for obtaining a residence permit, launch preferential mortgages and lending, and so on. For students, we will create technology parks and business incubators, and for graduates – conditions for employment in Russian IT companies and high-tech projects. Our efforts do not go unnoticed. Russia ranks first in the world in terms of technological competencies, first in terms of skills in the field of Data Science, which indicates the highest level of training. In addition, this year the WorldSkills Russia team took first place at the open championship for Asian countries, ”said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
Dmitry Livanov, Rector of MIPT, noted: “It has become a great honor for MIPT to host the ICPC for the first time in Moscow. We are sure that a few days spent in the capital will be remembered for a long time by all the participants of the competition, volunteers and organizers. Regardless of how the competition awards were distributed, we can safely say that everyone who made it to the finals of the most prestigious IT championship is already a winner. The guys whom we congratulate today on the victory are those who tomorrow will stand at the origins of new breakthrough technologies, who will change our world for the better! “
“It’s an incredible experience knowing who to turn to when you have to do something impossible. And I will say based on my experience: I said to sponsors, organizers and partners: “Let’s do the impossible”. Who should you turn to if you need to accomplish the impossible? Now I know that this is possible here, in the heart of Russia, in Moscow. And I would like to express the depth of my admiration for how quickly and deeply people here figured out how to make the impossible possible and make sure that we are all here today. We have already set the bar higher than ever before in human history and will continue to set it even higher! ”Said William B. Poucher, Professor, ICPC Executive Director, President of the ICPC Foundation.
During the final tests, the participants solved unique algorithmic problems for a while, for which it was necessary to recognize mathematical models. For example, it was necessary to propose ideal points for shooting all the domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral, to write a program that would determine a list of phones with minimal opportunity costs, or determine the minimum cost of installing road signs, taking into account and regulating speed limits on the roads.
“Remember: IT is an area where you cannot be satisfied with what has already been achieved. Stay hungry for new knowledge, develop in the most advanced industries, from artificial intelligence to biotechnology, set new digital trends. We will continue to support you and are always glad to see you in key digital projects in Russia ”, – in conclusion, the Deputy Prime Minister addressed the participants.
