from Yu. Ivanko.

In autumn, the rodents change their bright red fur to a long and thick gray one and begin to stock up on food for the winter.

Mospriroda experts recommend not feeding the squirrels before the onset of frost. In warm weather, rodents can find their own food in the natural territories of Moscow. If people begin to feed the animals, they will become lazy, stop looking for food on their own and will be dependent on humans.

You can feed the protein after a severe cold snap or after the formation of ice on the ground. During this period, you can bring dried fruits, nuts (except almonds), acorns, unroasted and unsalted seeds to their feeder. Mospriroda experts remind that it is forbidden to feed animals by hand. Squirrels have sharp teeth and can carry dangerous diseases.

Feeders can be made for squirrels. They need to be installed on special posts or on tree trunks near inanimate paths and in small glades near paths. Also, houses for squirrels can be brought to any eco-center or directorate of natural areas of the State Budgetary Institution “Mospriroda”.

Squirrels are often found in natural areas of Moscow. In length, the animals reach 30 centimeters and weigh about 400 grams. They easily jump from tree to tree, overcoming in a straight line up to four meters, and use their tail as a rudder. On the ground, they jump in length for a distance of up to one meter.

In winter, squirrels do not hibernate, in autumn they change their red fur to gray to make it easier to camouflage themselves in the forest. Now the animals are stocking up on food for the winter. They fill the hollows with nuts, seeds, acorns and cones, and bury them in different places. Also, animals love to feast on dried mushrooms, which are hung on the branches in advance. After eating, the squirrels return to their shelter and sleep. And to keep the house warm, squirrels insulate it with animal hair, moss and dry grass.
