The defense organization of the Saratov region and the 22nd Guards Donbass Red Banner Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, stationed at the Engels airbase, are linked by a long-standing friendship, enshrined in an agreement on mutually beneficial cooperation.

Frequent guests in the division are employees and cadets of the Engels Driving School DOSAAF. The acquaintance of future soldiers with the aviation military formation takes place directly in military units and subunits, as well as in the location of the barracks of conscripts.

The Museum of Long-Range Aviation is especially popular with the residents of the region. This unique open-air museum was opened in 2000, and its exposition includes 10 aircraft, cruise missiles and aerial bombs. The museum, which is visited by more than five thousand tourists a year, also displays Long-Range Aviation attributes, aircraft models, stands illustrating the history of Long-Range Aviation, aircraft dashboards, and aircraft weapons. The museum is a valuable resource for the military-patriotic education of the inhabitants of the Saratov region and, especially, of its younger generation.

The division’s crews have repeatedly taken part in aerospace forces in the Syrian Arab Republic. The pilots were marked by world records in flight range and duration: on a Tu-160 aircraft (24 hours 24 minutes – 20 thousand km), on a Tu-95MS aircraft (42 hours 17 minutes – 28 thousand km). In 2003, the division was awarded the pennant “For Courage, Military Valor and Combat Training”, and in December 2011 it was awarded the St. George Banner. Air units of military parades in honor of Victory Day are not complete without the participation of Engels crews. They regularly fly under the strategic containment plan over the world’s oceans.

The day before, at the request of the regional department of DOSAAF of the Saratov region, the Central Council of DOSAAF of Russia awarded the division commander, Major General O. Pokryshkin ”were awarded to the commanders of units and subunits of the formation.
