The action was organized in the year of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer F.M. Dostoevsky. To carry it out, a team was formed from among the employees of the department, which visited the cities of St. Petersburg, Veliky Novgorod, Staraya Russa, Pskov.
The action was supported by the Faculty of Psychology of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, whose representative joined the team of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, and the Russian State Library.
The start of the event on September 27, 2021 in Moscow given by the director of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia Alexander Kalashnikov. He noted that the Action is primarily aimed at re-socializing convicts serving sentences in correctional institutions. In this regard, in each region along the route, employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, together with representatives of the public and journalists, visited colonies, correctional centers, took part in psychological trainings with convicts and their relatives.
The first stop during the rally of the FSIN team was the manuscript department of the Russian State Library, which is located in the Pashkov House. Earlier, on June 30, 2021, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia signed a cooperation agreement with the RSL, in connection with which the library management showed great interest in this literary action.
The Pashkov House houses a unique exhibit – the Gospel, which Fyodor Dostoevsky read during his stay in the Omsk prison. In the book, you can see the entries made by the writer. At the end of the meeting, representatives of the RSL handed over books for the libraries of correctional institutions to the participants of the rally.
Then the rally team, having covered more than 700 kilometers, arrived in St. Petersburg, where the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, Major General of the Internal Service Igor Potapenko, introduced it to the employees of the Department and public figures. Petersburg is inextricably linked with the name of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Here passed the writer’s youth, his studies at the Main Engineering School, here he was arrested in the case of the “Petrashevtsy”, spent eight months in the Peter and Paul Fortress, and also experienced a tremendous shock – the execution of the death sentence “through execution”, which was canceled in last minute.
These events were the subject of a lecture by one of the participants of the Action, Deputy Head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, Lieutenant Colonel of the Internal Service Vladimir Lebedev, which was held for the personnel of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. A film by the Center for Public Relations of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia “Tobolsk Gate of Dostoevsky” about the writer’s stay in the Omsk prison was also shown.
On the same day, the participants of the rally visited correctional colony No. 5 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, where, with the participation of a senior teacher of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, an honorary employee of the penitentiary system Fyodor Ushkov, psychological training for convicts took place, as well as the premiere of the performance based on one of the early stories of F.M. Dostoevsky – “Someone else’s wife and husband under the bed.”
The program of the rally in St. Petersburg was very eventful. Part of a team led Deputy Head of the DSP of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia Alexandra Samarina took part in a round table meeting on the topic “Book in Prison”, which took place in the F.M. Dostoevsky. Writers, artists, filmmakers, human rights activists, public figures, members of the POC, veterans of the service were invited to the dialogue. The meeting resulted in proposals for cooperation between the regional Federal Penitentiary Service and the Writers’ Union of the city, as well as other public organizations.
At the same time at the St. Petersburg University of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia the rest of the rally team, led by Elena Oludina, a representative of the DSP of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, met with the first-year cadets.
The program of the action in St. Petersburg would be incomplete without a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, which became a prison for Dostoevsky for eight long months. Sergei Pyatovsky, head of the archives of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, spoke about how this time dragged on for the writer.
From the northern capital, the rally team went to the Novgorod region, where the most intense literary years of F.M. Dostoevsky.
The first stop was correctional colony No. 7, where the convicts showed the play “The House of the Dead” based on the story of F.M. Dostoevsky’s “Notes from the House of the Dead”. It was prepared by the Honored Artist of Russia, director Daniil Donchenko. He attracted one professional artist to work, who played the main role – convict Alexander Goryachnikov, whose prototype was Dostoevsky himself, the rest of the roles went to convicts.
The play “Dead House” is included in the online program of the International Theater Festival F.M. Dostoevsky, which will begin in Veliky Novgorod on November 6, 2021.
In Staraya Russa, where the rally team headed after Novgorod, literally everything is connected with the name of the writer: streets, a school, a new embankment, restaurants, cafes, a library. The walls of the houses are decorated with huge murals based on his works.
The participants of the action visited the F.M. Dostoevsky, as well as a unique museum dedicated to the novel “The Brothers Karamazov”.
The last city in the rally program was the Pskov region, where the team members visited correctional colony No. 4. Together with the relatives of the inmates, they examined the detachment’s premises, the library, the dining room, and tasted the prepared food. Theatrical sketches prepared by the convicts based on the works of F.M. Dostoevsky.
The final stage of the rally took place in the Pskov branch of the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia… After the lecture on the history of the UIS and the demonstration of the film, the cadets who had won the previous intellectual game based on the work of the great Russian writer were awarded. After the completion of the program in Pskov, the team of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia returned to Moscow.
Until the end of 2021, events dedicated to the life and work of F.M. Dostoevsky, will be held in all institutions and bodies of the penitentiary system of the Russian Federation. As a result of the event, the Public Relations Center of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia together with the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia will prepare a special video film.
The action “Roads of Redemption” has become the fourth large-scale project of the DSP of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia. Previously, similar events were dedicated to the work of A.P. Chekhov and L.N. Tolstoy.
