The crews of the Mi-24 attack helicopters and the Mi-8 transport and combat helicopters of the Central Military District (TsVO) flew in the clouds in conditions of minimal visibility during a tactical flight exercise in three regions of Russia, taking place as part of a combat training check for 2021 training year.

During the exercise, the pilots performed piloting at altitudes up to three thousand meters with a minimum visibility in continuous clouds of up to 9-10 points, I am guided only by the readings of the instruments. The crews worked out combat training missions in climb, hover, level flight and descent modes. The difficulty of piloting in the clouds is the lack of visibility, ground and air reference points. In addition, the Mi-24 and Mi-8 crews practiced descent and landing approach using the landing system of the airfield, which consists of several radio beacons located at different distances from the runway. Using the coordinates of these points, the pilots determined a straight line for the landing approach and performed a “blind” descent until visibility improved, after which they made a visual landing.

The exercise, which will end at the end of this month, involved 30 Mi-24 attack helicopters and Mi-8 transport and combat helicopters, about 300 military personnel from among the flight and engineering personnel, the control and flight support group.
