Together with students, volunteer teachers conduct environmental and animal protection campaigns, participate in charitable gatherings for wards of non-profit organizations, and much more.
More than 620 volunteer centers operate in educational institutions in Moscow, which support schoolchildren and students in creating good initiatives and projects useful for the city. Of these, 488 centers are open in schools, 69 associations operate on the basis of universities and 63 – in colleges. They work in educational organizations and school volunteer teams. The volunteer movement in schools and colleges numbers over 550 associations, which include more than 39 thousand people. It is supervised by the Moscow Center “Patriot.Sport”… In each administrative district, on the basis of several schools, 20 support sites have been created that help teachers and students.
Volunteer communities are developed by teachers, who often volunteer themselves. They share their volunteer experience with children and motivate them for new achievements. We are talking about teachers who not only give school knowledge, but also teach children to do good deeds.
Inspire children through personal experiences
Larisa Lebedeva, a teacher-organizer of School No. 667, has been working at the school for almost 35 years – and more than 30 of them, together with her students, has been volunteering at the New Year’s tree in the Kremlin Palace. She organizes and supports young volunteers who see off guests, arrange seating in the hall, and help the actors.
According to the teacher, the main advantages of volunteering for her are the opportunity to gain interesting experience and communicate with representatives of different generations.
“Building communication with each other is very important, and volunteering is incredibly helpful in this. For example, through personal experience, I can inspire my students. When I show them photos from events in which I myself have participated, the guys are excited about it and a wave of questions! Many students ask you to take them with you next time or suggest what they can also participate in. So, if you light yourself, light others, ”says Larisa Lebedeva.
Give people joy
Eteri Sokhina, teacher of the Metropolitan College of Service and Hospitality Industry, became interested in volunteering in 2017, while studying for a magistracy. Inspired the future teacher to try herself as a volunteer, her supervisor. The most touching event in which she took part was the “Candle of Memory” action in memory of the fallen heroes of the war, and the most beautiful was the cadet ball at the Victory Museum on Poklonnaya Gora.
According to Eteri Sokhina, volunteering helps self-realization, teaches children and young people to communicate and develops life skills. She herself receives inspiration from volunteering and the opportunity to try herself in different roles. For example, you can become a vaccination helper, a photographer, or hand out ribbons at a holiday and just make people happy.
Together with the students, the teacher goes through the training programs of the Mosvolonter center. In the fall of 2020, they joined the series of webinars “Seven Steps to Developing a Volunteer Center. Team and Collaboration ”and“ Interaction with Beneficiaries: Successful Communication ”.
“After training, the children began to feel more confident, began to independently study the history of the development of the volunteer movement in the world, and especially in Russia. They learned how to draw up checklists, learned who the team leaders are and what competencies they possess, what are the rules of volunteer behavior at events, what is community management and what is the structure of the volunteer movement, ”said the teacher.
The students applied the acquired knowledge and experience during the actions “Feed a friend”, “Green office”, “Sated hare”, “Congratulate a veteran”, “Good dictation” and others, as well as at the “Volunteer of Moscow” competition.
Study with children
Some teachers are volunteered by the students themselves. Margarita Buchina, a teacher at School 2075, joined volunteering in the spring of 2019. A year earlier, tenth graders from her school had been involved in organizing events for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. After the children’s stories of volunteering, she wanted to volunteer herself. The first event for her was the Moscow Urban Forum – 2019: the teacher consulted the guests, communicated with people from different countries, helped navigate the forum, and gave them a good mood.
Margarita Buchina has been teaching additional classes for her students for several years. They study journalism, learn to edit videos and work in the frame. In addition, the guys actively help in volunteer actions and have repeatedly participated in competitions with environmental projects and won prizes.
“Our circle of volunteers who are interested in journalism and social issues helped me to channel my creative energy into development in another profession. After all, I studied together with the guys. We participated in various media forums, master classes, journalism and photography contests. Sometimes, as a reward for participation, we got live meetings in well-known editorial offices with experienced journalists. You can only dream of this! ” – said Margarita Buchina.
According to her, not only being an English teacher, but also realizing her potential in journalism, media volunteering helps her. Here the experience of working as a photographer and videographer came in handy. For two years, Margarita Buchina has already spent more than 200 hours of filming as a volunteer.
“As a media volunteer, I filmed at the Spasskaya Tower military music festival, on City Day at VDNKh, at the Circle of Light festival, photographed participants in sports marathons and volunteers’ visits to city shelters for homeless animals. It’s nice that now my photographs are cited as an example at master classes for novice media volunteers. And I, as a speaker and teacher, can share my experience with volunteers and suggest how to make a beautiful shot, ”the teacher said.
