Today, on the Day of the Hydrograph of the Russian Navy, the Commander of the Northern Fleet (SF), Hero of Russia, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, congratulated the leadership, military personnel and civilian employees of the Hydrographic Service of the Northern Fleet on their professional holiday. He noted the leading role of the Northern Fleet hydrographers in the development of the Arctic navigation theater, the study of the seas and islands of the Arctic Ocean.

In addition to direct participation in research activities, the hydrographs of the Northern Fleet are actively involved in the popularization of their work, attract young people to the study of the Arctic, and conduct prospecting activities. During the joint complex expedition with the Russian Geographical Society (RGO) “Remember the War”, the crew of the hydrographic vessel of the Northern Fleet “Romuald Muklevich” confirmed the coordinates of the location of the patrol ship “Tuman” at the bottom of the Barents Sea, which died in an unequal battle with three Nazi destroyers 80 years ago. Hydrographers also discovered the Bluebell corvette, the Matabele destroyer, the Passat patrol ship and an unknown ship (presumably RT-67), which perished along with the Passat.

Earlier, in August and September, several underwater objects were discovered in the Barents and Kara Seas off the Severny Island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and off the continental coast. Most of them are ships and vessels that died in the early and middle of the 20th century.

The research group confirmed the coordinates of the previously discovered by the search and rescue forces of the large hunter BO-224 and the submarine D-3 “Krasnogvardeets”, the German submarines U-307 and U-387. In addition, in the Kara Sea, the coordinates of the previously discovered ships and vessels of the BD-5 convoy, which died there in 1944, were confirmed.

In recent years, the hydrographers of the Northern Fleet have made more than 30 geographical discoveries related to the melting of glaciers.

For reference:

The Day of the Hydrograph of the Navy dates back to October 13, 1827, when the Office of the General Hydrograph was created and Vice Admiral Gavriil Andreevich Sarychev (1763-1831), an outstanding explorer-oceanographer, compiler of numerous maps of the Bering, Okhotsk and Baltic seas, was appointed the first head.
