The first open access ecosystem interuniversity quantum network in Russia was launched in Moscow. It united the campuses of the National Research Technological University MISIS (NUST MISIS) and the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI). This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The network was created within the framework of the project “Development of network software solutions for quantum networks”. The presentation of the official launch took place in the “Boiling Point – Commune” coworking space.
“Russia is one of the world leaders in the development of quantum technologies. In June, we launched the first quantum backbone line between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The launch of the first ecosystem interuniversity quantum network is an important event in the Year of Science and Technology announced by the President. A modern platform has appeared in Russia for the implementation of technological infrastructure solutions in the field of data protection using quantum cryptography. It is valuable for the Government that young scientists, students and postgraduates took part in the development of the network. The implementation of such solutions has great potential and will help narrow the gap in the construction of quantum communications, create urban and intercity infrastructure networks for the needs of the economy, and develop this industry not only in the country, but also at the global level. In total, it is planned to launch 7 thousand km of quantum networks in the country by 2024, ”noted Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The project to create an ecosystem interuniversity quantum network is being implemented by the participants of the consortium of the Center of Competence of the National Technological Initiative (NTI) “Quantum Communications”, created on the basis of NUST “MISiS”. With the support of the Ministry of Education and Science, students, postgraduates and young scientists from the capital’s universities, specialists from specialized partner organizations took part in the development.
The ecosystem interuniversity quantum network consists of five nodes located in the buildings of NUST MISIS and MTUCI. It has an open architecture and scales as new members emerge. Universities, scientific organizations, industrial partners and government agencies get access to the network. On the basis of the network, they can develop modern software applications in the field of information security using quantum keys.
“In 2018, on the basis of NUST MISIS, the NTI Center for Quantum Communications was opened, headed by a young ambitious scientist Yuri Kurochkin. The center is engaged in scientific research, training specialists in the field of quantum communications. This year, the scientists of the center, together with colleagues from MTUCI, the companies QuRate and Security Code, launched the first open-access quantum network in Russia, which will become part of a project to create software solutions for information security, “added the rector of NUST MISIS. “The main advantage of our quantum network is its openness. We want to create a new approach to development through a technologically advanced and accessible infrastructure. In my opinion, this will radically change the quantum communications market, which today is limited by the number of business proposals based on quantum networks. And for the creation of applied software, its testing, debugging and demonstration, consumers need a real infrastructure, ”said Yuri Kurochkin, director of the NTI Competence Center“ Quantum Communications ”.
The configuration of a quantum-protected communication channel corresponds to that adopted in industrial networks. Keys generated at a speed of 30 Kbit / s are transmitted between trusted communication nodes by the method of quantum key distribution over existing optical communication lines, which allows connecting more than 10 high-speed encryptors simultaneously.
The developers plan to loop the architecture of the quantum network, which will provide new opportunities for its development. The advantage of this topology is that if the fiber breaks on one of the lines, the network connectivity will not be lost. In addition, on the basis of the rings, it is possible to build a city network with a more complex architecture, when one node works for many consumers – banking and financial organizations, telecom operators, business representatives in the field of the fuel and energy complex, transport, modern technologies.
