In 2021, in accordance with the order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Military Orchestra Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (VOS of the RF Armed Forces) is celebrated.
From the first days of the construction of the Red Army, military music found wide application both in combat training of troops and in the system of moral-combat and cultural-educational training of army and navy soldiers. To manage the military orchestral affairs, by order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic No. 194 of January 14, 1921, the Bureau of Military Orchestras of the Red Army and Navy was established. This day is considered the birthday of the Military Orchestral Service of the RF Armed Forces. The main task of the Bureau was to provide musical support for the combat and daily activities of the troops.
On August 1, 1921, a department of the Red Army Headquarters for the management of military bands was established. Subsequently, the Military Orchestral Service has repeatedly undergone organizational changes, but its main task has remained unchanged.
Since May 1, 2016, the VOS of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is subordinate to the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation – First Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia.
The most striking field of activity of the modern Military Orchestra Service is the musical accompaniment of Victory parades, various military rituals, concert activities and, of course, participation in international military music festivals both in our country and abroad.
The celebrations on the occasion of the anniversary of the service are timed to coincide with the 140th anniversary of the birth of one of the founders of Soviet military music, a prominent specialist in military orchestral affairs, conductor, composer and musical public figure, laureate of the USSR State Prize, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR, professor, general Major Semyon Chernetsky (born October 24, 1881 in Odessa). His name is widely known not only in our country, but also abroad. The works of Chernetsky, especially his military marches, are a reflection of a whole historical period – the period of the formation and development of Soviet musical art. Many of them were included in the golden fund of Soviet music and are in the active repertoire practice of military orchestras.
From 18 to 24 October, as part of the festive events at the Military Institute (military conductors) of the Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the Central Military Orchestra of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, the second in the history of the modern Russian army will be held the Review-Competition of military conductors of military bands of the RF Armed Forces. And on October 24, at the Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army, a gala concert will be given with the participation of the winners of the Review-Competition of Military Conductors, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Military Orchestra Service of the RF Armed Forces and the 140th anniversary of Major General S.A. Chernetsky.
