In the Saratov region, at the Engels airfield, commemorative events were held dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the only navigator of the USSR aviation, twice awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel Vasily Vasilyevich Senko.
They were attended by the command and personnel of the long-range aviation regiment, representatives of veteran and public organizations, as well as relatives of the outstanding military navigator.
An exhibition dedicated to Vasily Vasilyevich was organized on the basis of the Museum of the Aviation Regiment.
Representatives of the veterans’ union presented the command of the Engels heavy bomber regiment of long-range aviation with commemorative letters and a picture with Vasily Senko, on which it was written: “Glory to the super-navigator!”
In addition, representatives of the church held a prayer service and consecration of the strategic missile carrier Tu-160, which bears the name of Vasily Vasilyevich Senko.
Vasily Vasilyevich Senko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 25, 1943, and also dated June 29, 1945, thereby becoming the only navigator in aviation to be awarded this title twice.
In total, during the war, he made 430 successful sorties for bombing, reconnaissance, additional reconnaissance and designation of important enemy targets, as well as the destruction of his manpower and equipment.
After the war, he was in navigational positions and in pedagogical work in the military educational institutions of the Air Force.
In 1952 he graduated from the Air Force Academy and since 1960 he was in a teaching position at the Tambov Higher Military Aviation Red Banner Pilot School named after Marina Mikhailovna Raskova.
The strategic missile carrier Tu-160 (tail number 11), based at the Engels airfield, bears the name of Vasily Senko.
