In the classroom, townspeople learn to install applications, create accounts on social networks, watch movies on online platforms, and much more.

During the year of the “Master the Gadget” project, more than four thousand older Muscovites have become its permanent participants. The project was created on the basis of club spaces “My social center” (MSC) to teach as many older citizens as possible to use smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

“The ability to easily navigate the online space is an important skill for living in the modern world. The goal of the “Master a Gadget” project is to teach “silver age” Muscovites to use mobile technologies in order to overcome the social isolation that has appeared during the pandemic. This initiative of the Moscow Social Centers has given more than four thousand older people the opportunity to communicate with relatives who live in other cities and countries, make new friends, attend online club classes, order food at home, be creative and use many others online. -services ”, – said Elena Gromova, director of“ Moscow social centers ”.

The first classes of the project were held in 2020 in the club spaces “My Social Center” in the districts of Preobrazhenskoye and Sokolniki. These were offline lessons in groups of up to five people. The participants were told about the basic functions of mobile devices and the specifics of working with different cellular operators.

During the year of work, the project has received noticeable development. Some of the project’s graduates were so carried away by modern technologies that they began to write their own blogs. For them, the team “My social center”prepares more advanced lessons on the social network “Instagram”, special applications for video editing on the phone, and more.

Due to the epidemiological situation, the classes moved to the online space. Training videos are regularly published on the YouTube channels of My Social Centers. More than 300 video tutorials were posted during the year. Many project participants appreciated the convenience of the distance learning format. The time saved on the road can be spent on learning by adjusting a comfortable pace of training.

“Thanks to the project“ Master the Gadget ”I began to understand my smartphone better. Previously, I had to contact my grandchildren for every occasion, but now I just turn on a video on the desired topic and learn to work with the gadget on my own, ”- shared her successes Nina Glushkova, a project participant from the Preobrazhenskoye MC.

An important feature of the “Master the Gadget” project is an individual approach to each student. More than 50 young people, employees of the Moscow Social Centers, help to make the education of older citizens easy and interesting, and the lessons – accessible and understandable. They are always in touch, so if, after watching the training video, the participant still has questions, he can call one of the city club spaces “My Social Center” and ask the tutor for more information.

In the summer, “My Social Centers” resumed full-time work, and at the initiative of the project participants in the MSC, self-organized clubs “Master the Gadget” again began to conduct classes in an offline format. During the meetings, the project alumni help newcomers to explore the world of modern technology and digital devices.

At the meetings, we learned how to create a Google account, understand Yandex.Maps, make an appointment with a doctor using the app, use a pedometer, and all this is only thanks to our club, ”said a member of the“ Master the Gadget ”club at the MSC“ Kotlovka ”Galina Chernavina.
