Russia not only plays a vital role in maintaining peace and stability in the South Caucasus, but also occupies a key place in the Armenian economy. On Tuesday, on the occasion of the opening of the plenary session of the Eighth Armenian-Russian Interregional Forum, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said this in his welcoming speech, which was read out by Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan.
“The Russian Federation not only plays a vital role in maintaining peace and stability in our region, but also occupies a key place in the economy of our country. Russia is Armenia’s main trade partner. In 2019, our bilateral trade exceeded the $ 2 billion threshold, and this year a double-digit growth in trade turnover has already been recorded, “Pashinyan’s message says.
The head of the Armenian Cabinet also indicated that Yerevan is interested in further mutual integration of the two countries, which should be based on the free movement of goods, services, labor and capital. “The Eurasian Economic Union, in turn, serves this strategic goal, and we are interested in strengthening this structure and improving its institutions. The need to diversify our economic ties is also obvious,” the message says.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his greeting to the forum participants, said that relations between the Russian Federation and Armenia are of a truly allied nature, that a meaningful political dialogue and productive cooperation in various fields have been established between the two countries. In the message spread by the Kremlin, the Russian leader noted that the meeting will give a start to new initiatives that will contribute to strengthening the fruitful Russian-Armenian partnership, as well as promoting integration processes in the Eurasian space.
The organizers of the forum are the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia. Russian-Armenian interregional forums have been held since 2011 with the aim of expanding cooperation between the territorial units of the two states. High-ranking representatives of Russia and Armenia have repeatedly called this event a manifestation of the Armenian-Russian allied relations and an effective tool for interregional development.
