A commemorative event dedicated to the 32nd anniversary of the tragic death in a plane crash of paratroopers of the 8th paratrooper company of the 217th Guards paratrooper regiment of the 98th Guards Airborne Division was held in the Ivanovo Guards Airborne Regiment.

As part of the event, a rally was held, at which the commander of the guard regiment, Colonel Alexander Yudin, as well as colleagues, parents and relatives of the fallen paratroopers, spoke.

The crash of the Il-76 military transport aircraft, which transported the servicemen of the 8th company, occurred on October 18, 1989, when the personnel were returning to the point of permanent deployment after completing a mission in the zone of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.

Five minutes after takeoff, at night, at an altitude of 1.6 thousand meters, one of the aircraft’s engines caught fire. Having lost control, the plane fell into the Caspian Sea.

All on board were killed – 48 paratroopers and 9 crew members.

Since then, October 18 has become a tragic date in the history of the Ivanovo guards unit of the Airborne Forces. In memory of the paratroopers of the 8th company, a memorial was erected on the territory of the unit. The command of the regiment, invited guests and relatives of the dead servicemen laid flowers at its foot.

In a separate guards airborne assault formation from Ulan-Ude, in the library of the military unit, a special book exhibition dedicated to this tragic date in the life of the troops was opened.
