Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Cape Verde on 17 October. The turnout was 48%. According to preliminary results, the victory was won by the candidate from the “African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde” J.M. Neves, who received 51.7% of the vote. Representative of the ruling party “Movement for Democracy” K. Weig received the support of 41% of voters and admitted defeat.

According to international observers, including from the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, the elections were held without serious violations and were marked by a high level of organization of the expression of the will of citizens.

Moscow welcomes the successful holding of the presidential elections in Cape Verde, which became an important stage in the advancement of Cape Verdean society along the path of stable and democratic development. We are determined to further strengthen the traditionally friendly ties between Russia and Cape Verde in various fields in the interests of the peoples of both states.
