Diesel medium submarine S-178 of project 613B was lost on October 21, 1981 as a result of a collision with the RFS “Refrigerator-13”. On the day of the disaster, the submarine under the command of Captain 3rd Rank V.A.Marango was returning to base after a two-day trip to sea. Against the background of the coastal lights of Vladivostok and the ships standing in the roadstead, the RFS-13 lights from the submarine’s bridge were noticed when the ship was very close. At 19 hours 45 minutes “Refrigerator-13” hit the S-178 on the left side in the area of the 6th compartment. Through the resulting hole, the compartment was flooded within 15-20 seconds. The boat has received a strong list. Approximately 40 seconds after the collision, the C-178, which took about 130 tons of water, lost its buoyancy and sank under the water, sinking at a depth of 31 meters. Rescue operations to raise the crew were carried out over several days. In total, 32 people died during the accident.
The monument to the crew of the submarine “S-178” was created on the initiative of the submariners and erected at the Marine Cemetery of the city of Vladivostok at the burial place of the dead submariners. It opened in 1982, on the first anniversary of the sinking of the submarine. The monument is a metal fencing of the conning tower of the “C” submarine, erected on a granite pedestal. The names of the dead submariners are engraved on the granite tablets, which are located at three common graves. 16 submariners are buried in the mass grave.
