During the expanded meeting of the military council, the Commander of the Northern Fleet, Hero of Russia, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, congratulated the scientific leader of the complex expedition, Colonel Sergei Churkin, and in his person all the participants of the Arctic expedition of the Northern Fleet, which was awarded the Prize of the Russian Geographical Society.
Admiral Alexander Moiseev noted that “for the first time the expeditionary activity of the Northern Fleet was so highly appreciated by the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Russian Geographical Society.”
On October 19, in Moscow, the President of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) Sergei Shoigu presented the award in the category “Best Expedition to Russia” to the participants of the project “The Main Facade of Russia. History, Events, People ”based on the results of complex expeditions of the Northern Fleet in the archipelagos of the Arctic. The prize was awarded to the senior specialist of the Northern Fleet’s rescue team, Captain 2nd Rank Denis Krets, and to Ruslan Zhostkov, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Fundamental Problems of Ecological Geophysics and Volcanology of the IPE RAS.
In the complex expeditions of the Northern Fleet, operating within the framework of the project “The main facade of Russia. History, events, people ”, 6 expeditionary detachments took part, more than 100 military personnel and civilian specialists of the Northern Fleet were involved.
Since 2018, the Northern Fleet, together with the Russian Geographical Society, has conducted a number of integrated expeditions to the Arctic. In 2018, they explored Novaya Zemlya, in 2019 – the islands of Franz Josef Land, and in 2020 the geography of the expedition was expanded with Severnaya Zemlya, Taimyr, New Siberian Islands and Wrangel Island. All these are not just land plots, but pages of the tragic and heroic history of the development of the Arctic. All joint expeditions of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society are united in a single historical and cultural project “The main facade of Russia. History, events, people ”.
The RGS Prize is a prestigious award in the field of national geography, ecology, conservation and popularization of the natural and historical and cultural heritage of Russia, as well as support for the popularizers of geographical science and education. Established in 2014. It is held once every two years and has an international status.
The prize recognizes projects successfully implemented: the results of scientific research, outstanding expeditions, innovative ideas in the field of education and enlightenment, popular science films, television, publishing projects dedicated to geography, nature protection, ethnography, history and culture of Russia.
