You need to clear it of fallen leaves, cut the trees and process the greenhouse.

The summer season is coming to an end. It is important to take care of the plants so that the next year is fruitful. Elena Nazarova, agronomist of the state budgetary institution “Greening”, told about how to prepare a summer cottage for the coming cold weather.

Remove leaves

First of all, you need to remove fallen leaves on the site, clear paths and paths. If this is not done, then during the winter the leaves will mix with the snow, and in the spring they will turn into a dirty porridge.

Fallen leaves will also not add health to the lawn: under a layer of leaves, the grass will rot, which may lead to the development of diseases in the future. Cleaning must be approached responsibly, especially if the garden suffered from diseases, the pathogens of which live in the leaves. In winter, dangerous insects often accumulate in them. After the end of the cold weather, the pests will instantly move to the trees. At risk are apple and plum trees.

Prune trees

Sanitary pruning is best done after all the foliage has fallen. The trees will be in a dormant state and nothing will harm them.

At the same time, you should not delay too much, waiting for the cold weather. The air temperature should not be lower than minus eight degrees. First of all, it is necessary to remove all diseased, damaged and dry branches. The trunks must be cleaned of moss, cracked bark and lichens. You can also perform formative pruning by removing branches growing in the same direction.

If done correctly, this will not only improve the condition of the plants, but will also prevent floors and the accumulation of snow on the branches.

Process the greenhouse

Greenhouse processing is another important process on which the yield in the next season depends. First, you need to clear the beds from tops, fallen fruits and other plant debris. It is also best to remove the topsoil as it may contain pests. Then you need to carefully inspect the entire structure for damage. It is advisable to cover the cracks with a sealant, and replace the cracked glass with new ones.

Then it is necessary to thoroughly rinse and disinfect the room. At the end of the work, the structure must be well dried, ventilated and closed for the winter.

If the greenhouse is film, the material must be removed in the fall, disinfected and stored in a dry place, and the frame must be cleaned of contamination and impregnated with a primer.

We plant vegetables and herbs

In October – November, the weather still allows you to sow seeds before winter. To carry out such work, the average daily temperature should not be below zero degrees, while it is important that the temperature during the day fluctuates from two to four degrees above zero.

For autumn plantings, you need to choose cold-resistant crops. Vegetables include onions, carrots, beets and radishes. You can also sow parsley, lettuce and sorrel.

Before frost, it is necessary to have time to plant tulips. In this case, they will bloom in late April – early May.

After planting, the seeds must be sprinkled with soil. For winter crops, it is best to prepare a mixture of light earth, sand, low-lying peat, well-rotted compost. The sowing depth before winter is the same as in spring. But the seed rate must be increased by 30 percent (there is a possibility that some of them will die in winter).

To protect the planting, you can cover the beds with spruce branches or wood chips. This will help to accumulate more snow over the crops, which will protect them from frost, and during a thaw, will not allow the soil to thaw. In the spring, the shelter should be removed as soon as the snow melts.

Protecting plants

In the fall, you need to take care of the plants that will remain for the winter. It is important to prune perennial flowers by removing all dried buds and leaves. It is advisable to free them from young and unproductive shoots, and shorten the branches by 5-10 centimeters. After pruning, it is advisable to process the bushes with iron sulfate.

You should be especially careful about the wintering of roses – with their hilling, as well as with shelter, you should not rush. Better to do this in two steps. From mid-October, lightly add soil to the base of the shrubs to protect the plants from unexpected early frosts. And before the onset of constant cold weather, completely cover from above with a special material. But don’t do it in rainy weather. In a humid environment, there is a high risk of developing various fungal diseases, so it is advisable to wait for colder, but dry weather.

It is imperative to carry out the autumn whitewashing of trees. It will help protect trees from fungi and pests that have settled in the bark for the winter. In addition, whitewashing garden trees, like ornamental trees, protects the trunks from ice formation.

It is necessary to whitewash the trunks only in dry weather when the air temperature is above five degrees. At lower temperatures, trees can become covered with a thin ice crust. If the whitewash lies on top of it, it will drain into the first thaw.

In this case, the solution is applied not only to the trunks, but also to the skeletal branches – they also suffer from sunburn and frostbites.

Young trees planted this year cannot be whitewashed, as whitewashing will slow down their development in the future. It is best to wrap thin trunks with material, this will help save them from the sharp teeth of mice and hares.
