Dmitry Chernyshenko elected Chairman of the MIPT Supervisory Board

Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (National Research University) (MIPT).

At the meeting of the supervisory board, the Strategy for the development of the university until 2030 was also approved and the candidacy of Dmitry Livanov was recommended to the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia for appointment as rector of MIPT. He held the position of acting head of the university since June this year.

“Dmitry Viktorovich has rich management experience both as a rector and as a federal minister. Over the past months, we have repeatedly discussed the development strategy of the university, as well as the inclusion of MIPT in the implementation of our large-scale work on the formation of a new state program for scientific and technological development. I am sure that under his leadership the university will achieve ambitious results prescribed in the new development strategy and will bring scientific developments to a qualitatively new level, ”added Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Dmitry Chernyshenko noted: “MIPT is one of our leading technical universities. He should take an active part in the implementation of breakthrough fundamental and applied scientific research, as well as become a driver in the implementation of strategic initiatives approved by the Government of Russia. These are primarily Engineering Schools and the University Technology Entrepreneurship Platform. Phystech has a system of basic departments and a well-functioning system for accelerating student startups, but the main thing, of course, is the close connection of the university with industrial partners – representatives of the largest industrial corporations. I instructed the Ministry of Science, together with the leadership of the university, to work out a model for creating a world-class campus. It is in great demand at Phystech, ”Dmitry Chernyshenko said.

“In 2021, declared by the President of the Russian Federation as the Year of Science and Technology, active work is underway on a new state program for scientific and technological development, and the role of MIPT in it is quite serious. The university will be used not only as a research, but also as a large methodological center. Participation in the program of state support for universities “Priority-2030” will give a big impetus to its development. MIPT showed excellent results, received not only the basic, but also a special part of the grant for the Research Leadership track, ”said Valery Falkov.

According to the new strategy, the university will focus on such areas as quantum technologies and photonics, mathematical modeling and artificial intelligence, advanced functional materials, genetics and biomedical technologies, space and aviation technologies, and technologies for sustainable development. By 2030, it is planned to increase the number of students from 8 to 9.9 thousand people and expand the laboratory base. Now the university has 79 laboratories. Acting Rector Dmitry Livanov told the Supervisory Board in detail about the MIPT Development Strategy until 2030. “The Phystech model has proved not only its effectiveness over the past decades, but also its relevance today. The university is distinguished by a unique system for the search and development of talents from all over the country; deep training in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering specialties.

It is symbolic that the Phystech Supervisory Board includes the Minister of Industry Denis Valentinovich Manturov and the heads of the largest scientific and industrial corporations. The connection with basic research, on the one hand, and the industrial sector, on the other, is the DNA of the university. The country faces new challenges – digital transformation, energy transition and the climate agenda. It is they who set a new vector for the development of Phystech – training a new generation of scientists and engineers to ensure the country’s scientific and technological leadership. We have ambitious plans before us – for example, by 2030 to enter the top 10 world subject rankings of universities in physics. “

As part of his visit to MIPT, Dmitry Chernyshenko examined the Arktika educational and laboratory building, the laboratory of hard-to-recover minerals, the scientific and technical center for applied geophysics and the study of mineral resources and the scientific and technological center of autonomous energy, where he got acquainted with the developments of young scientists. As the Deputy Prime Minister noted, the university has already achieved high results in the development and production of promising chemical current sources and lithium-ion batteries, as well as in the creation of a software and hardware complex to support operational decisions during marine seismic surveys. “Most importantly, the developers are young people with an average age of 32. It is important not to slow down and increase the number of innovative developments that we can bring first to the Russian and then to the world markets, ”said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
