Yuri Trutnev chaired a meeting of the Government Commission to ensure the Russian presence in the Spitsbergen archipelago

“The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has repeatedly spoken about the Arctic as a strategically important territory, where practically all aspects of national security are concentrated. This important task is under the control of the country’s leadership, ”said Yuri Trutnev.

In 2020, by order of the Government, the Strategy of the Russian presence in the Svalbard archipelago until 2030 was approved, as well as a plan for its implementation for the first five-year period until 2025. The solution of the tasks outlined in the strategy directly depends on the work of the main Russian organization conducting economic activities on the Spitsbergen archipelago – the State Trust “Arktikugol”. In addition to the issues of the current activities of the trust, work on attracting qualified personnel and improving the social and living conditions for employees of the enterprise, the formation of a long-term development plan for FSUE “Arktikugol” was considered in order to ensure the Russian presence in Spitsbergen.

Another issue was the reconstruction of the thermal power plant in the village of Barentsburg. Reconstruction is necessary to reduce the level of emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, including CO2. They discussed the need to reduce the volume of coal production in the archipelago in order to ensure the international obligations of the Russian Federation to comply with climatic and environmental standards established in Norway, the progress of the investment project for the construction of a fish processing enterprise.

The agenda also included issues of development of scientific and educational activities. The program of scientific research in the archipelago for the period 2022–2026 was considered. Proposals for the inclusion of FMBA of Russia in the consortium and supervisory board of the Russian Scientific Center on the Spitsbergen archipelago are presented.
