The bulbs should be in the ground about three weeks before the onset of stable subzero temperatures.
The planting of tulips is nearing completion in Moscow. They will decorate the capital during the May holidays. To do this, they will already be planted on city flower beds more than 14 million bulbous.
Yulia Smirnova, head of the landscape design department of the State Budgetary Institution “Automobile Roads”, said how to plant tulips in suburban areas correctly. Now is the right time for such work.
Before the first frost
The best period for planting bulbs is from late September to late October. However, if autumn is warm, work can be postponed to November.
It is very important to focus on the weather, because the bulbs should be in the ground about three weeks before the onset of stable subzero temperatures. So the seeds will have time to take root before frost, but at the same time they will not be able to germinate.
Planting tulips before is pointless. Bulbous plants begin to take root when the soil temperature drops to plus 10 degrees. If the ground is warmer, the roots will not form.
When choosing a place for planting, you need to take into account the flowering period of tulips. They are among the first to bloom, but at the same time they fade very quickly and leave dry stems and leaves. To keep the flower bed blooming, other flowers should be planted nearby, which will cover the withering plants. Tulips can be planted again by digging up the bulbs and saving them until fall.
Soil fertilization and sanitary control
Tulips prefer light, fertile soil. The earth needs to be prepared: two to four days before planting, dig it up so that it has time to lie down. Sand, peat, humus and complex fertilizers for garden flowers should be added to the soil.
Be sure to peel the outer husks of the bulbs before planting. The main thing is to do it carefully so as not to damage the bottom, from which the roots will grow.
After removing the husk from the bulb, all the imperfections will become visible. Damaged seedlings should not be used, since they not only will not give good flowering, but can also infect other plants with fungal diseases.
Before planting, it is also advisable to disinfect the bulbs by soaking in a solution of potassium permanganate for 30-60 minutes.
Tulips love sunny places and light partial shade. They thrive on higher elevations and sunny slopes. Depending on the type and size of flowers, they can be planted in ceremonial flower beds, alpine slides and mixed flower beds.
When planting, it is very important to correctly determine the depth of the hole. It directly depends on the size of the bulb and should be three times its height. Usually it is 12-15 centimeters.
The distance between the holes depends on the height of the future flowers. If the plants are large, then there should be 10 centimeters between them, and about 25 centimeters between the rows.
It is necessary to place the bulb in the hole strictly vertically, with the bottom down, otherwise the seedling will germinate longer, with difficulty breaking through the ground.
In addition, if the weather is dry in autumn, then the flower beds should be watered regularly.
