Specialists in the radiation, chemical and biological protection of the Western Military District liquidated the consequences of a conditional man-made disaster during a special exercise in the Kursk region.

The exercise took place on the territory of the “Inns” military training ground in the course of fulfilling the standards for the assignment or confirmation of the honorary name “Strike Unit”. As part of a tactical task, the consequences of an accident at a nuclear power plant were simulated. Upon arrival at the scene of the “catastrophe”, RChBZ specialists deployed field reconnaissance posts to provide assistance to the conditionally injured and to process contaminated equipment.

Chemical reconnaissance divisions using IMD-2S dose rate meters and GSA-4 toxic agents on RHM-6 vehicles detected the zone and degree of contamination. Also in field laboratories, samples of soil, water and air were taken for the composition of such toxic substances as sarin, soman, mustard gas, chlorine and ammonia.

At the final stage of the exercise, the servicemen began degassing, decontaminating and disinfecting areas of the contaminated area. Heat engines UTM-80 were actively used for the prompt processing of large areas.

In total, more than 1,000 servicemen of the NBC defense of the Western Military District took part in the exercise, about 50 units of weapons, military and special equipment were involved.
