Servicemen of the mountain formation of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District (YuVO), stationed in Karachay-Cherkessia, began to prepare the horses of the pack-transport platoon for the winter period

In a regular smithy, specialists repair harness and forge horseshoes. The horses will be replaced by summer horseshoes with winter ones with thorns. The logistics service of the brigade carried out the delivery of more than 80 tons of hay and 15 tons of oats. To maintain the immunity of animals in the cold season, vitamins were obtained, the specialists of the veterinary service carried out compulsory vaccination of animals. The horses were transferred from summer sheds to prepared, insulated winter stalls.

More than 100 pack horses of the Karachai and Mongolian breeds “serve” in the unit.

Particular attention is paid to the process of training horses, instilling in them the skills not to be afraid of shooting and explosions. Horse breeders teach horses to make rock and mountain trails in packs to transport mortars, heavy weapons, ammunition, food and equipment on packs. A bunch of four horses can carry up to 250 kg of cargo per day.

Pack caravans are used when performing service and combat missions in hard-to-reach areas of the terrain, where the use of other types of transport is limited or impossible.
