Every day, units of the radio technical troops (RTV) of the Leningrad Army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Western Military District (ZVO) accompany up to 1,500 aircraft of various types, from strategic and transport aircraft to sports aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles in different ranges of altitudes and flight speeds.

The radar stations of the RTV ZVO units are capable of detecting any air targets in the area of responsibility along the Russian border. Information about air objects is timely updated by operators of RTV command posts.

Every year in the air defense units of the Western Military District, thanks to intensive combat training, the number of specialists who have the necessary practical experience in the use of RTV technology and are allowed to carry out combat duty to protect the airspace over the territory of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation increases. Over the course of a year, over the territory of the Western Military District, operators of radar stations detect and track more than half a million air targets.

RTVs are the main source of information about an air enemy and are intended for conducting radar reconnaissance, monitoring aviation flights and observing the rules for using the airspace of the Russian Federation by aircraft of all departments.
