More than 40 thousand servicemen of the Western Military District (ZVO) at more than 180 sites in 26 constituent entities of the Russian Federation took part in the International Educational Action “Geographical Dictation”.
The event was held simultaneously in all formations and military units of the Western Military District and in open areas in places of deployment. The action was attended by servicemen and members of their families, as well as civilian personnel and pupils of the Youth Army.
Before writing a dictation in the building of the Military-Historical Library at the headquarters of the Western Military District, Colonel-General Alexander Zhuravlev, commander of the Western Military District, addressed all the participants of the action with the words: “This action will allow each participant to get an independent assessment of their knowledge in the field of geography. I am sure that this event will increase the interest of citizens in studying the geography of our Motherland. “
Representatives of the regional branches of the Russian Geographical Society, geographers, local historians, travelers and public figures were invited to all venues for the dictation.
The dictation consisted of 40 questions, divided into two parts according to the degree of difficulty. The 10 questions in the first part covered well-known facts from geography. The second part of 30 questions allowed the participants to use imaginative thinking, logic and erudition in search of the correct answer.
Geographic dictation has been held annually since 2015. Participants anonymously answer questions about the geography of Russia. The action is of an educational nature and is aimed at popularizing geographical knowledge, as well as increasing interest in science and national heritage.
