On November 19, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation celebrate the Day of the Missile Forces and Artillery. This memorable date was established 77 years ago by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 21, 1944.

It was on November 19, 1942, that the Red Army’s counteroffensive at Stalingrad began with the volleys of thousands of artillery pieces, marking a radical turning point in the Great Patriotic War. In this bloody battle, the decisive role of artillery as the main fire strike force, contributing to the final defeat of the enemy, was manifested.

Modern rocket troops and artillery of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation includes rocket troops and artillery of the Ground Forces, artillery of the coastal forces of the Navy and artillery of the Airborne Forces.

Currently, formations, military units and subunits of missile forces and artillery are receiving modern designs, many of which are superior, and some, such as the Iskander-M missile system, have no analogues in the world.

The jet formations are being armed with multiple launch rocket systems of both large and medium caliber of the Tornado family (300-mm MLRS “Tornado-S” and 122-mm MLRS “Tornado-G”). The advantages of these multiple launch rocket systems are the increased power of the rockets, high rate of fire, long range and mobility of the complexes.

Artillery units continue to receive modernized 2S19M2 Msta-S self-propelled howitzers, fully integrated into the missile forces and artillery control subsystem of a single tactical control system. They have an increased rate of fire and are capable of operating in a “flurry of fire” mode, during which several shells fired from one gun at different angles simultaneously reach the target, thereby increasing the density of fire and the possibility of guaranteed defeat of the enemy.

Rocket, rocket and artillery units are used in the form of reconnaissance and strike (fire) complexes that ensure the destruction of targets in real time.

Formations and military units of the branch of the military showed high proficiency in the performance of combat training missions, including combat launches of missiles and live artillery firing at a strategic command-and-staff exercise
