In Volgograd, artillerymen of the Southern Military District (YuVO) fired a “Memory Shot” on the southern slope of the Mamayev Kurgan in honor of the anniversary of the start of the Soviet counteroffensive near Stalingrad.
By tradition, the shot was fired from the front-line 76-mm ZIS-3 divisional guns by the crews of the salute division from the guards motorized rifle unit of the Southern Military District.
The command, the personnel of the Volgograd garrison of the Southern Military District and the servicemen of the guard of honor of the motorized rifle unit of the Southern Military District laid flowers at the Eternal Flame in the Hall of Military Glory on the Mamayev Kurgan.
Also, flower-laying ceremonies took place in the village of Pyatimorsk to the monument “Union of Fronts”, in Kalach-on-Don near the memorial stele “City of Military Glory” and at the mass grave of Soviet soldiers who fell in battles during the liberation of Kalach from the Nazi invaders …
The ceremonies were attended by employees of law enforcement agencies, representatives of the Volgograd region administration, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and military service veterans, youth soldiers.
Annually, on November 19, in commemoration of the merits of the artillery soldiers in the defeat of the Nazi troops at Stalingrad, the Day of the Rocket Forces and Artillery is celebrated. It was on this day that the historic Soviet counteroffensive began, which lasted 76 days.
On November 19, 1942, Operation Uranus began – a strategic offensive by Soviet troops near Stalingrad, which led to the encirclement and subsequent defeat of Paulus’s army. On the first day, 1st and 26th Panzer Corps advanced 18 kilometers, and on the second day, 40 kilometers. On November 23, in the Kalach-on-Don area, the encirclement ring around the 6th Army of the Wehrmacht was closed. Having suffered huge losses, the Germans could no longer advance along the entire Soviet-German front.
