Performances for young audiences, created by outstanding composers and playwrights, have always been a success.

November 21 marks the 56th anniversary of the founding of the Moscow State Academic Children’s Musical Theater named after Natalia Sats. The Glavarkhiv has preserved materials related to its history.

The first performance shown by the theater in 1965 on the stage of the Variety Theater was the opera by M.I. Kraseva based on the fairy tale “Frost”. After that, the performances of opera and ballet for young spectators, created by outstanding composers and playwrights, were a resounding success. At that time, The Blue Bird, Twelve Months, The Golden Cockerel, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, The Nutcracker, Snow White, Lefty, Mowgli, Thumbelina were staged.

Palace of Music for Theater

The theater was famous for its directors and teachers. Conductors V.M. Yakovlev and L.A. Gershkovich, choreographer B.F. Lyapaev, teachers R.N. Sats and Z.D. Myasnikov. The troupe included the best graduates of musical and choreographic higher educational institutions: V.A. Ivin, V.M. Barsky, I.P. Chirkov, I. V. Makarova, Zh. I. Magalyas, A.M. Tsarev.

However, the theater did not have its own building. For many years it was temporarily housed in the premises of the former puppet theater on October 25 Street (now Nikolskaya Street). But in 1974 the executive committee of the Moscow City Council ordered to erect a special building for the institution on Vernadsky Avenue.

Construction according to the project of architects A.A. Velikanov and V.D. Krasilnikov was completed in 1979, and the troupe got its own palace of music. This became possible thanks to the initiative of the person who created the theater – director, playwright and teacher Natalia Sats. Evgeny Vakhtangov noted her impeccable ear for music and directorial abilities.

Even in her youth, Natalia Sats was warmly received by small spectators. In addition, she also showed her outstanding abilities as a team leader. The performances of her theater enjoyed great success not only at home, but also during tours of Europe and America.

Sats is even called “the mother of children’s theaters in the world”, because at the age of 15 she created the first theater with a repertoire for children – the Children’s Theater of the Moscow City Council, then the Central Children’s Theater, as well as the Theater of Young Spectators in Almaty.

The traditions of children’s musical theater, when Natalia Ilinichna died, were continued by her associates and followers, each time meeting the audience together with the Blue Bird crowning the building of the institution.
