Here was the beginning of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad and the entire Second World War.

In July-November 1942, during fierce battles on the outskirts of Stalingrad, Soviet troops stopped the Nazis at a front with a length of more than 800 km. At this time, the main forces of the German fascist troops were drawn into heavy bloody battles in the area between the Volga and Don rivers.

The headquarters of the Supreme High Command developed a plan to encircle the enemy’s Stalingrad grouping, code-named Uranus. The troops of the Southwestern and Stalingrad fronts, with the assistance of the Don Front, were to join up in the Kalach-Sovetsky area and encircle the units and formations of the enemy’s 6th field and 4-tank armies.

At the end of September 1942, Lieutenant General Pavel Ivanovich Batov was appointed commander of the 65th Army, which was part of the Don Front.

On November 19, 1942, the troops of the Southwestern and Stalingrad fronts, after a powerful artillery preparation, launched a decisive offensive. For active and successful actions in the Battle of Stalingrad, including the liberation of the territory of the Kalachevsky region from the Nazis, many soldiers and officers of the famous unit were awarded orders and medals.

As a result of the bold actions of the 26th Panzer Corps of General L.G. The homeland was crossed by the Don and on November 23 with a battle occupied Kalach-on-Don. On this day, units of the 4th Panzer Corps of General A.G. Kravchenko of the Southwestern Front and the 4th Mechanized Corps of General V.P. The Volsk Stalingrad Front united in the area of the Soviet farm.

In the ring were 22 enemy divisions and more than 160 separate units. The defeat of the encircled Nazis marked the beginning of a radical turning point in the Great Patriotic War.

In commemoration of this event in 1953 in the village of Pyatimorsk at lock number 13 of the Volga-Don shipping channel named after V.I. IN AND. Lenin, the monument “Connection of the fronts” was erected.

The multi-figured 16-meter composition reflects the meeting of the warriors of the two fronts.

On one of the standing pedestals there is an inscription: “On November 23, 1942, in the Kalach region, the mobile strike groupings of the Southwestern and Stalingrad fronts were united, which completed the encirclement and subsequent defeat of the 330,000-strong group of German fascist troops.”

The author of the majestic monument was the sculptor, People’s Artist of the USSR E. Vuchetich.

On a frosty morning on November 19, 2011, in the city in the Cherkasy microdistrict, the grand opening of the monument to the commander P.I. Batov, whose troops, following the order of the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command, took part in the famous Soviet counteroffensive near Stalingrad, which ended with the connection of the Southwestern and Stalingrad fronts.
