They will be installed in the pavilion before its opening after restoration.
18 historical chandeliers that adorned Pavilion No. 5 “Physics” (formerly “Latvian SSR”) at VDNKh will again appear in the central and introductory exhibition halls. Now work is underway to recreate them as part of the reconstruction of the pavilion.
“Studying archival documents and photographs, the restorers discovered that the stylistic design of the pavilion was complemented by four types of lighting fixtures: two wall sconces and two chandeliers in the side compartments of the entrance hall, as well as 12 basket chandeliers and two large boat chandeliers in the side compartments of the central hall. They also contain details of the national floral ornament – these are flowers, leaves, ribbons and ears. Chandeliers were a prominent part of the interior and one of the central elements of decorating the halls of the pavilion, and not only fulfilled their main function. Therefore, it was decided to recreate them “, – said the head of the department
Pavilion 5 occupies a central place in the composition of the squares of the Baltic republics at the main exhibition of the country. At first, it demonstrated the achievements of the national economy of the Latvian SSR, so it was decorated in the appropriate national style. Over time, part of the Latvian design was lost under layers of paint and bulky false structures, and part was lost.
During the restoration, many of the lost details of the facade and interior decor were recreated, and all the surviving elements were restored.
How chandeliers are recreated
Each lighting fixture is recreated from scratch – based on the surviving photographs. Craftsmen make models by which one can judge the general appearance of the chandeliers. Parts are made from plasticine, plaster or wax, and then assembled on a frame.
Wall sconces models are almost ready. For the chandelier of the side compartment of the entrance hall, separate parts were prepared, which are assembled on the frame. We also compiled a fragment of a basket chandelier in its entire height and prepared a model of a boat chandelier in the central hall.
“After the models are approved, they will start casting, forging and turning metal parts and making shades. After casting, the elements are processed, they are filing, grinding, polishing (on separate parts). The attachment points are also prepared: drilling and threading with drills of different sizes are performed. For plafonds of complex configuration, molds will be made according to which they will be cast, the rest of the glass parts will be made by blowing. Then the final assembly of the chandeliers will begin, several hundred parts will need to be carefully docked together, ”explained Alexey Vasyutin.
When the reconstructed chandeliers are ready, they will be re-installed in their original locations in 1954. All work is planned to be completed by the opening of pavilion 5 at the main exhibition of the country.
VDNKh is a unique public space with more than 80 years of history. On its territory there are 49 cultural heritage sites, including pavilions, sculptural compositions and historical fountains. The area of the country’s main exhibition exceeds 325 hectares.
