Servicemen of the engineer-sapper unit of the Southern Military District (YuVO) have begun to clear the territory of the international airport in Sukhum.

Specialists carry out activities for the detection and destruction of unexploded ordnance and explosive ordnance (UXO) using OVR-2 “Sokol” protective suits and modern mine detectors IMPS-2, which have improved sensitivity and selectivity to various UXOs. The work of sappers is complicated by high dense vegetation, in connection with which the IMR-2 engineering vehicles based on the T-72 tank will be used to survey difficult-to-pass areas.

At the moment, the servicemen have checked and cleared 0.2 hectares of land from GPs. In total, sappers will have to survey about 7 hectares of difficult terrain.

Among the “finds” of sappers are unexploded ordnance of various types and calibers, including anti-tank mines, artillery shells and mortar mines. GPs that cannot be removed and moved are destroyed on the spot by detonating an overhead TNT charge.

The works are carried out in accordance with the established demining standards and strict adherence to safety requirements. In particular, each sapper is involved in demining no more than 5 hours a day and only during daylight hours.

In total, 14 servicemen of the Southern Military District are involved in demining the territory of the airport in Abkhazia, of which 10 sappers have extensive experience in demining land plots from GPs on the territory of the Chechen Republic.

For reference:

Demining activities are carried out on the basis of an appeal by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Abkhazia to the First Deputy Minister of Defense – Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Valery Gerasimov, in assisting in the detection and demining of the territory of the International Airport in Sukhum.
