On the deck of the flagship of the Baltic Fleet (BF) – the destroyer “Persistent”, a ceremony was held to present the crew with the icon of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called. The event was attended by: the commander of the Baltic Fleet, Vice Admiral Viktor Liina, representatives of the fleet command and members of the ship’s crew.

During the ceremony, the rector of St. George’s Naval Cathedral of the Baltic Fleet, assistant to the commander of the surface ships formation for work with believing military personnel, Archimandrite Sofroniy solemnly presented the ship’s commander, Captain 2nd Rank Anton Ganiev, with the icon that had passed the rank of consecration. Then Archimandrite Sophrony held a prayer service on the destroyer.

For reference:

The Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called is one of the twelve apostles – disciples of Jesus Christ. He was the first to be called by Jesus Christ, therefore he was called the First-Called.

In 1698, the Russian Tsar Peter I instituted the first and then the remaining highest award in Russia – the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. The first holder of this order was one of the founders of the Russian fleet, Fyodor Golovin. Later, Peter I established the flag of the Russian fleet – Andreevsky, placing on the naval flag the image of the cross of St. Andrew (two blue stripes intersecting diagonally on a white background).
