Russian-Palauan diplomatic relations were established on November 28, 2006.

In recent years, relations between the two countries have been steadily developing. A significant event was the first ever visit to Russia by the President of the Republic of Palau, T. Remengesau, who visited Moscow and took part in the INNOPROM exhibition in Yekaterinburg, which took place in July 2018. In December 2018, the intergovernmental Agreement on the mutual abolition of visa requirements for citizens of Russia and Palau entered into force. Joint work continues to improve the legal framework for promising cooperation and to establish practical cooperation. Interaction is being carried out in the UN system and at other multilateral platforms.

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, an exchange of congratulations took place between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Palau G. Aytaro. The telegram of the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in particular, noted that the deepening of Russian-Palauan interaction in solving urgent problems of the international and regional agenda, including within the framework of the format “Russia – Small Island Developing States of the Pacific”, will contribute to sustainable economic growth , ensuring stability and security in the APR.
