Today in Moscow, within the framework of summing up the results of the joint work of the Ministry of Defense and the Russian Geographical Society, State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Nikolai Pankov and First Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Academician Nikolai Kasimov made reports.

Thanks to the contribution of Russian naval commanders, navigators and travelers, it was possible to comprehensively study their native land and forever unite the Russian Geographical Society with the army and navy. Prominent military figures such as admirals Fyodor Litke, Ivan Kruzenshtern, Ferdinand Wrangel, Peter Rikord, generals Fyodor Berg and Mikhail Vronchenko stood at the origins of the foundation of the society. Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov mentioned this in his speech.

“Continuing the glorious traditions, we, together with the Russian Geographical Society, organized 15 large-scale scientific expeditions in 2021, which made it possible to conduct unique research in the Arctic region of Russia, on the outer islands of the Gulf of Finland, on the islands of the Kuril ridge, natural and historical sites of the Tyva Republic, as well as other activities of a scientific and exploratory nature, “Nikolai Pankov said. In addition, thematic exhibitions were organized and held at 276 sites, in all regions of our country, which were attended by more than one and a half million people, a mobile exhibition project “The Golden Fund of the Russian Geographical Society” was launched, which was exhibited with great success in 22 cities of the country and caused a lively genuine interest among citizens, as well as a number of various educational and educational projects.

The interest of servicemen, civilian personnel of the Armed Forces and members of their families to the unified international educational action “Geographical dictation” is growing.

This year, the number of dictation sites deployed in the Armed Forces has increased by 34% and amounted to 1,590 sites. More than 170 thousand servicemen, civilian personnel of the Armed Forces and members of their families took part in the action.

More than 800 different events were held to popularize geographical and historical knowledge, as well as over 25 joint events with the Russian Geographical Society.

“Today we are with you,” Nikolai Pankov said, “we will sum up the results of the year, listen to how work is organized in the regions of our large and beautiful country, and also listen to the opinions of guests who will assess the results of our joint activities. For their contribution to our joint cause following the results of the outgoing 2021, a number of officials were encouraged by awards from the Ministry of Defense and the Russian Geographical Society, the deputy head of the military department added.

“The Russian Geographical Society traditionally carries out active interaction with the Russian army, which today is reaching a qualitatively new level,” said Nikolai Kasimov, First Vice President of the Russian Geographical Society.

According to him, the combined resources of the Russian Geographical Society and the Armed Forces make it possible to work more effectively in expeditions and other projects.

“For example, members of expeditions climb Elbrus in the footsteps of its first conquerors, raise sunken warships from the bottom, study the population of polar bears,” said Nikolai Kasimov.

As the representative of the Russian Geographical Society noted, the exhibition of archaeological finds at the excavations of the Tunnug mound in the Republic of Tyva, which was presented by the Russian Geographical Society at the International Military-Technical Forum “Army-2021”, is also a vivid example of the results of large-scale projects.

The Russian Geographical Society is the oldest public organization in Russia; this year the Russian Geographical Society celebrated its 176th anniversary.
