Heavy snowfall, water accumulation due to a thaw or a sharp cold snap – cleaning the city must be carried out quickly and efficiently in any conditions. We will tell you how the city copes with winter surprises, how long it takes to eliminate the consequences of a snowfall, and where to complain if the courtyards are covered with snow and icing on the roads.

Cleaning standards

In the capital technology of snow removal, all factors are taken into account – from the amount of precipitation and temperature to the direction of the wind. It is strictly regulated how much time should be spent on each type of work, as well as how many people and equipment should participate in them.

So that the weather changes do not come as a surprise, utilities have their own meteorological service. Weather reports arrive early, allowing you to start preparing streets no later than four hours before ice or snow falls.

Snow removal can involve 10.5 thousand units of specialized snow removal equipment and over 70 thousand specialists. The city also has 56 snow-melting stations and 38 mobile snow-melting installations, which are capable of utilizing about 650 thousand cubic meters of snow per day.

Snow and ice on the roads

The main task of road services is to ensure the continuous and safe movement of transport. Before the onset of bad weather, de-icing treatment is carried out, primarily the most dangerous areas – steep descents and ascents, embankments, bridges and flyovers, tunnels and intersections, braking areas at public transport stops.

Road cleaning is carried out after every five centimeters of snow falls or at the end of the snowfall. Snow is swept to the side of the road in small shafts or drifts to send to snow-melting points. First of all, they clean large highways, approaches to public transport stops and metro stations, socially significant objects. At the same time, processing with deicing materials is carried out.

Utilities have three days to completely remove the 10-centimeter layer of snow that has fallen from major roads and streets. For every five centimeters above this rate, one more day

Snow at stops and stations

Five hours after the end of the snowfall are allotted for the complete removal of snow near stops, metro stations and train stations. In case of prolonged precipitation, the wipers clean the passages for passengers after every five centimeters of snow falls.

In case of icy conditions, asphalt and tiles are promptly treated with deicing materials. To speed up the work, orange containers with a stock of crushed stone of a fraction of two to five millimeters are placed near public transport stops and underpasses.

A stock of deicing materials helps utilities to respond quickly to changing weather conditions and additionally ensure the safety of citizens.

From snowdrifts to icicles: how the yard is cleaned

In the courtyards, first of all, they clean sidewalks near houses, approaches to entrances, schools, kindergartens, clinics and other important social and transport facilities. In heavy snowfall, this is done after every five centimeters of precipitation.

Small-scale mechanization means, including hand rotors, help to speed up the work process for the wipers. They allow you to quickly throw freshly fallen snow onto lawns without forming snowdrifts due to uniform spraying. However, if the height of the snowdrifts on the lawns exceeds 80 centimeters, then the surplus must be removed and disposed of. It is also forbidden to store snow with an admixture of deicing materials on lawns. Small snowdrifts are formed from it, far from buildings and playgrounds, and then taken out within four to seven days.

Two days after the end of the snowfall, it is set aside to clean the roofs that open onto highways, sidewalks, pedestrian areas, entrances to entrances, playgrounds and other places with heavy traffic. In other places – a day more. Works are carried out only during the daytime. Also, utilities and building owners are required to promptly knock down ice and icicles from the roofs.
