The name of this particular person is remembered with a kind word by all the submariners of our country when it comes time for lunch, because General Uvarov is the creator of the modern diet in the submarine fleet.

The beginning of this serious work was laid in 1963, when Oleg Uvarov, in the military rank of engineer-captain, became an adjunct of the Military Academy of Logistics and Transport at the Department of Food and Military Nutrition. In adjunct, he dealt with the problems of food supply for nuclear submarines. During this period, with research purposes, on the instructions of the Central Administration of the USSR Ministry of Defense, he took part in a long, 37-day cruise of the nuclear submarine “K-181” (project 627A), which performed combat missions in the Atlantic Ocean. From July 13 to August 15, 1964, the engineer-captain Uvarov was responsible for the experimental feeding of the crew of a nuclear submarine using specially developed food products in special containers and packaging.

The results obtained made it possible to develop substantiated proposals for the rationing of food for submariners, the composition, assortment and placement of food supplies, a nutrition scheme, substantiate the requirements for the design of catering facilities on the nuclear submarine, food technology for submariners, special containers and other issues.

Therefore, when submariners today, out of habit, joke “war is war, and lunch is on schedule,” they know whom to thank for a full and tasty meal on long trips.
