Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated athletes and fans on the 75th anniversary of national hockey. The birthday of one of the most popular sports in Russia is celebrated annually on December 22. It was on this day in 1946 that the first games of the national championship in Canadian hockey were held in the Soviet Union.

Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that the famous “Red Machine” is the historical leader in terms of the number of victories. Throughout its history, the USSR national team won 7 gold medals at the Olympic Games and 22 gold medals at the world championships.

“Today more than 623 thousand people are professionally engaged in hockey in Russia. There are 839 indoor ice sports arenas throughout the country. More than 3.7 thousand coaches are bringing up our guys and future champions. It is thanks to the coaches that the modern generation of hockey players preserves and enhances the traditions of Soviet hockey. The Russian national team is the current Olympic champion. Among amateur teams, the Night Hockey League, created in 2011 at the initiative of President Vladimir Putin, has become very popular. In the tenth anniversary season of 2020–2021, it brought together 19 thousand players from 70 regions of Russia. They also stimulate the development of this sport. The funds received by the winners of the NHL tournaments were used to build four new ice arenas in the regions: one each in Chelyabinsk and Kazan and two more in Yekaterinburg, ”said Dmitry Chernyshenko.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that the Government pays great attention to the development of hockey. Within the framework of the current national program “Red Machine”, the process of educating athletes is being systematized starting from children and youth. Also, advanced technologies are being introduced and the availability of hockey for all age categories is increasing.

“I sincerely congratulate all athletes and coaches on this holiday, for whom hockey is a matter of life, as well as all amateurs and fans. I wish you new and bright victories! ” – Dmitry Chernyshenko noted.
