The Russian Ministry of Defense and Norilsk Nickel will build a unique sports complex with a basketball center in Moscow by the end of 2024, which will become the home arena of the professional basketball club CSKA.

The corresponding concession agreement was signed by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Norilsk Nickel President Vladimir Potanin.

“A very important agreement is being signed not only for the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense, but also important for Moscow and the country and for our Russian sport in general,” said Sergei Shoigu.

The total area of the new building should be over 58 thousand square meters. About half of the area will be occupied by a basketball arena, and the rest of the space will be facilities intended for the needs of the Federal Autonomous Institution of the Russian Ministry of Defense “CSKA”. Completion of construction is scheduled for the end of 2024. According to the minister, such grandiose sports facilities were last built for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

The future home arena of PBC CSKA will become the only specialized basketball center in Moscow that will meet the requirements for holding matches within the framework of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Its capacity will be five thousand spectators.

The project provides for the transformation of stands for international competitions not only in basketball, but also in other sports, as well as concert and entertainment events. The multimedia system will allow displaying information in the lobby and on the facades of the building.

In addition to the basketball arena, the sports complex will include a swimming pool, a trampoline and acrobatic hall, gymnastics and martial arts halls.

Before the construction of the new sports complex, the issue of the development of the street and road network will be worked out, as well as the existing and predicted indicators of transport and pedestrian flows, including during the periods of competitions and peak loads, will be taken into account.

“For Norilsk Nickel, support for high performance sports is an important component of our business. We know that army sport is a brand, it is the pride of our sport and our country, and therefore we have always been very careful about it, ”Vladimir Potanin said at the ceremony.

Sport is not the only area in which Norilsk Nickel interacts with the Ministry of Defense. Potanin said that in the company the construction of the Main Temple of the Armed Forces was received with great enthusiasm. In addition, he thanked the military for their participation in the reconstruction of the airport runway in Norilsk.
