In the most difficult war years, people managed to preserve the spirit of the New Year holiday. The Victory Museum and Moscow’s tourist portal talked about how they hoped and expected the best, what they wished for each other at the front and in the rear.

The Victory Museum on Poklonnaya Gora is one of the most unobvious places where you can go in search of information on celebrating the New Year. However, it is there that unique items and documents are collected, testifying to the continuity of the tradition of meeting this winter holiday even in the most difficult and terrible times for the whole world.

Travel portal together with the Victory Museum prepared virtual tourdedicated to this particular part of the exhibition. The “Victory Tree” tour will help users imagine the atmosphere of New Year’s celebrations in the 1930s – 1940s.

The exhibition features about 60 rare exhibits, including genuine Christmas tree decorations and other New Year’s decorations. Historian Alexander Mikhailov, an employee of the Victory Museum, will talk about what greeting cards were sent to the soldiers at the front and what they sent them as gifts.

It is noteworthy that the beginning of the war was reflected in the style of the holiday. If in the late 1930s figurines of fairy-tale characters, animals, stars and snowflakes were hung on Christmas trees, then already in 1941 New Year’s toys in the form of tanks and airplanes were produced in the country.

During the excursion, you will see a collection of Christmas tree decorations that were made in artisan workshops when mass production was no longer working. Among the rarities of the collection are the figures of the main winter wizard, Santa Claus. One of them, made of cotton wool and papier-mâché during the evacuation war, was donated to the Victory Museum last year.

Particular attention is paid to the collection of greeting cards and letters from the front with New Year’s wishes. They will also show the surviving photographs, which capture the moments of preparation for the New Year and the celebration itself at the front and in the rear.
