The concerts will be held in the halls of the Moscow International House of Music from 11 to 23 January.

From 11 to 23 January, the traditional Christmas festival of sacred music will take place in the halls of the Moscow International House of Music. Metropolitan Hilarion and conductor Vladimir Spivakov acted as artistic directors. The festival will be supported by Department of Culture of the city of Moscow.

The opening ceremony of the XII Moscow Christmas Festival of Sacred Music will take place in the Svetlanov Hall of the House of Music. Traditionally, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk will take part in the evening. The program of works by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Paul Hindemith and Camille Saint-Saens will be presented by the Moscow Synodal Choir, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, soloists of the Bolshoi Theater and the New Opera Theater named after E.V. Kolobov. Arsentiy Tkachenko will be the conductor.

The festival, timed to coincide with the holiday of the Nativity of Christ, is one of the most striking and large-scale projects of the House of Music. Artistic directors of the show are Vladimir Spivakov, President of the House of Music, holder of the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace, member of the Patriarchal Council for Culture, and Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations. The festival is held with the highest blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

“Our task is to bring people love, goodness and truth, which, as Patriarch Kirill said, the Lord unites with the human mind. And our music festival also serves this lofty goal, finding a response in the hearts of people, which strengthens us in our resolve to continue and develop this forum, ”says Vladimir Spivakov.

According to Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, for many years the participants of the show have been acquainting listeners with famous masterpieces and completely new works of sacred music, which testify to the enduring ideals of love and mercy, sacrifice and fidelity, responsiveness and kindness.

Festival program

On January 15, a concert dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Nevsky will take place. The Yaroslavia Philharmonic Choir Chapel under the direction of Vladimir Kontarev, the Moscow Regional Philharmonic soloists Alina Yarovaya (soprano), Rodion Vasenkin (bass) and the gusliar duet consisting of Olga Alekseeva and Martha Nikitina will perform the oratorio Under Alexander’s banner by the Moscow composer Dovgan.

On January 19, the organist of the famous Cologne Cathedral, a researcher of Baroque music and professor at the Cologne School of Music Winfried Benig will perform. On the organ of the Svetlanov Hall, the musician will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The traditional event of the festival is the performance of the choir of the Moscow Sretensky monastery. A big concert of the renowned collective with a unique performing style will take place on January 21.

The festival will end with a traditional concert with the participation of maestro Vladimir Spivakov, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia and the Academic Big Choir “Masters of Choral Singing”. On January 23, the musicians will perform the Requiem of the Italian composer Luigi Cherubini.
