Environmentalists of the Northern Fleet plan to continue cleaning the Arctic from scrap metal. In 2022, this task will be performed by servicemen of the Kola Flotilla of diverse forces on Kildin Island. The work of the environmental platoon will begin with the onset of summer.

In the past two years, the personnel of the environmental damage elimination platoon have collected and prepared for removal about 700 tons of scrap metal. The works were carried out first in the eastern and then in the western part of the island.

The removal of scrap metal from the island was carried out with the help of landing ships and boats. They also brought personnel and equipment to Kildin.

Environmental clean-up of the Arctic is one of the priority tasks of the Northern Fleet’s logistics system, which is carried out annually in the summer-autumn period for several years. Large-scale work on Kildin Island was first started last summer. Previously, the cleaning of the island and the removal of garbage were one-off.

The main work to eliminate environmental damage in the Arctic was carried out by the Severomors on Kotelny Island in the Laptev Sea, where the Northern Clover military base of the Northern Fleet is located. Over the five years of operation, more than 3.5 thousand tons of metal waste was removed on the island, most of which were barrels of fuel and lubricants left there until the 90s of the last century.
