Two nameless bays off the coast of Yuriy Island in the southern part of the Kuril ridge were named after Heroes of the Soviet Union Marines of the Pacific Fleet, Petty Officer 1st Article Nikolai Vilkov and Red Navy sailor Pyotr Ilyichev.

The Pacific Fleet honors the memory of the Heroes of the Fatherland. The name of Nikolai Vilkov is a large landing ship in the fleet, and the name of Pyotr Ilyichev was given to the newest mine defense ship, which is currently completing factory sea trials in the Baltic.

From August 9 to September 2, 1945, during the 25-day Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Kuril operation, a group of troops of militaristic Japan was defeated. The list of soldiers of the Pacific Fleet, who gave their lives in battles in the south of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, has about 2 thousand people. Hundreds of soldiers and officers were awarded orders and medals. The high title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to 14 people. Heroes of the Soviet Union, the commander of a platoon of marines, foreman of the 1st article, Nikolai Vilkov and the Red Navy sailor Pyotr Ilyichev, closed the embrasure of the enemy’s pillbox with their bodies.
