On January 17, a press conference was held on the basis of the TASS news agency on security issues for the upcoming Epiphany bathing.

Andrey Pechenin, Head of the Department of the State Inspectorate for Small Vessels of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, spoke about the organization of the duty of rescuers of the Russian Emergencies Ministry at the places of Epiphany bathing.

From January 18, the Russian Emergencies Ministry, together with executive authorities and local governments, will begin to ensure the safety of bathing places on the Orthodox holiday. In total, more than 13,000 rescuers from the Russian Emergencies Ministry, 2,450 pieces of equipment, including about 200 watercraft and hovercraft, will be on duty at the open fonts. This year, according to preliminary information, it is planned to organize more than 3,000 bathing places. They are planned to be equipped with safe descents to the water, tents for changing clothes and heating, and installation of lighting on site. A prerequisite in authorized places of the ceremony is the duty of rescuers, police and doctors.

According to preliminary estimates, over 1 million 300 thousand believers will visit the equipped fonts.

“You need to prepare in advance for immersion in ice water. A contraindication is a number of diseases, for example, of the cardiovascular system and respiratory organs,” A. Pechenin noted.

In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, the authorities of the subjects may impose restrictions on holding mass events. At the same time, the forces and means of the EMERCOM of Russia, regardless of the decision of the authorities, will be ready to ensure the safety of people at water bodies.
