The military personnel of the Russian peacekeeping contingent ensured the safe visit of more than 100 pilgrims to the Christian monastery of Amaras, located on the demarcation line in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Residents from cities and remote areas of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as pilgrims from Armenia, accompanied by Russian peacekeepers on modern BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, arrived at the service at the monastery from Stepanakert.

“Russian peacekeepers ensure the safety of pilgrims who arrived at the Amaras monastery complex, which is located near the demarcation line. Therefore, the presence of peacekeepers is necessary. Also, the personnel checks the monastery complex for the presence of explosive objects in a day,” said Dmitry Orlov, a representative of the Russian peacekeeping contingent.

Servicemen of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh regularly ensure the safety of pilgrims who wish to visit the shrine of Amaras in the Martuni region.

“Today was a liturgy. Every week we come here for worship, and you protect us. Thanks! Thank God that you exist. Already peace of mind,” said Armenian pilgrim Narine Davidyan.

Amaras is one of the early medieval Christian monasteries and is located on the territory of the Martuni region. In medieval Armenia, the complex had the status of a well-known religious and cultural center.

As a result of the signing of the ceasefire agreement after the end of hostilities, the early medieval monastery of Amaras ended up in close proximity to the line of demarcation between the parties.

In accordance with the agreements indicated in the joint statement of the President of the Russian Federation, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, from 00:00 Moscow time on November 10, 2020, a complete ceasefire and all hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh were declared.

To control the ceasefire and hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, a peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation is deployed.
