Today, in the main base of the Baltic Fleet – the city of Baltiysk – commemorative events were held dedicated to the servicemen of the Marine Corps, who gave their lives 27 years ago while performing military duty in the North Caucasus.

The events of the Memorial Day, established in accordance with the resolution of the Military Council of the Baltic Fleet, began with the laying of flowers at the graves of the Hero of the Russian Federation Guards Major Yevgeny Kolesnikov and Commander of the Order of Courage Guards Major Oleg Silkunov.

A rally was held on the parade ground of the unit, which was attended by the commander of the Baltic Fleet, Vice Admiral Viktor Liina, personnel and veterans of the unit, relatives and friends of the dead servicemen.

At the end of the rally, Archimandrite Sophrony, rector of the Baltic Fleet Naval Cathedral, served a memorial service for the fallen soldiers.

Then the marines with portraits of heroes in their hands, accompanied by the sound of an orchestra, marched along the formation of the brigade and lined up at the memorial.

After that, the commander of the Baltic Fleet, relatives of the victims, officers and veterans laid wreaths and flowers at the memorial to the marines who died defending the Fatherland in different years.

The commemorative event ended with the passage of marine units in a solemn march.

During the day, the Military Glory Museum was opened to the public on the territory of the Baltic Fleet marine formation, where a separate exposition dedicated to the exploits of the Baltic marines was deployed.

During the performance of combat missions to restore constitutional order in the North Caucasus, from two shifts of the airborne assault battalion of the naval infantry of the fleet, more than 1,000 marines were awarded orders and medals for their courage and bravery in battle. Five guardsmen were awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, one of them, Guards Major Yevgeny Kolesnikov, posthumously.
