On January 18, the Rossiya Segodnya International Multimedia Press Center hosted a press conference on the results of ensuring security during the New Year and Christmas holidays.

Rinat Enikeev, Director of the Supervisory Activity and Preventive Work Department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, and Valentin Nelyubov, Head of the Main Fire Department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, spoke about the work of the units of the Russian Emergencies Ministry in the first decade of the new year.

During the holidays, almost 82,000 personnel and more than 19,000 units of basic and about 3,000 units of special fire trucks took up duty throughout the country.

In total, during the holidays, the fire departments of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia made more than 38 thousand operational trips, almost 1 thousand people were saved.

During the press conference, the role of volunteer firefighters was noted. With their participation, more than 2.5 thousand fires were extinguished. As a rule, volunteers come to fight the fire in the first minutes, preventing the spread of the fire. An important mission is carried out by volunteers in outreach work, urging citizens to comply with safety rules.

Purposeful information work and implemented preventive measures made it possible to minimize the number of fires and reduce material damage from fire.

One of the most effective measures for recognizing a fire in the initial stages is a fire detector. The device works at the slightest smoke and is able to notify others about the danger immediately. Thanks to such systems, about 250 people are saved annually. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia calls on citizens to equip their homes with smoke detectors, because 99% of all man-made fires occur in housing. At the same time, smoke becomes the main cause of deaths: a person can stay in an unbreathable environment for no more than three minutes. The sound signal of a fire detector is able to interrupt a person’s sleep, notifying others about the slightest smoke.
