In St. Petersburg, at the airfield of a separate transport mixed aviation regiment of the Leningrad Air Force and Air Defense Association of the Western Military District, training flights were held at night.

During the flights over the city, the crews of An-72, Tu-134M, An-12, An-26 transport aircraft and Mi-8 multipurpose helicopters of various modifications worked out piloting elements in conditions of limited visibility due to low clouds and precipitation during the day and at night with a strong side wind. When flying in such conditions, the aircraft crew does not have the ability to visually pilot the aircraft and proceeds to instrument piloting.

A special role in the training program was given to the landing of an aircraft, as the most difficult element of piloting in conditions of limited visibility.

Training flights, along with the tasks of improving the professional skills of crews, are one of the mandatory elements of pilot training, necessary to determine the individual parameters of the meteorological minimum for each pilot.
