Today, the engineering troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are celebrating the 321st anniversary of their formation.

Engineer troops are designed to perform the most complex engineering support tasks that require special training, the use of engineering equipment, special ammunition and equipment.

Organizationally, engineering troops consist of formations, units and subunits for various purposes: engineering reconnaissance, engineering and sapper, barriers, barriers, assault, engineering and road, pontoon-bridge (pontoon), crossing-landing, engineering-camouflage, engineering-technical, field water supply and others.

In the course of the joint strategic exercise “West-2021”, the engineering troops completed the entire range of engineering support tasks. For the first time, minefields were installed by forces of a unit equipped with an engineering system for remote mining. Also at the exercise, for the first time, a group of pontoon units managed to achieve a record capacity of water (river) crossings of 1.2 thousand units per hour in a limited section of the river.

Engineer Troops annually carry out the tasks of demining and clearing the area (objects) from explosive objects both on the territory of the Russian Federation and abroad (Nagorno-Karabakh, Syria, Laos). In total, in 2021, 17 thousand 543.8 hectares of territory, 1 thousand 164.9 km of roads, more than 2 thousand buildings (structures) were checked, 123 thousand 683 explosive objects were discovered and destroyed.

Since 2018, more than 130 hectares of territory have been cleared in Laos, more than 2,000 explosive objects have been discovered and destroyed, most of which were American-made aerial bombs in cluster munitions.

In Nagorno-Karabakh, since November 2020, engineer and sapper groups of the Russian peacekeeping contingent have cleared 2,328.7 hectares of territory, 689.5 km of roads, 1,937 buildings from unexploded mines and shells, discovered and defused 26,92 explosive objects .

On the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, Russian and Syrian sappers cleared 6,905.6 hectares of land, 3,112 buildings (structures), and 273.4 kilometers of roads. 43,888 explosive items were discovered and destroyed, including 5,961 improvised explosive devices.

The engineering troops are always ready to act in case of emergencies, to provide assistance to the local population in all regions of the Russian Federation. The forces and means of engineering troops are constantly involved in fighting fires and preventing the consequences of floods and floods. In 2021, the engineering troops participated in the fight against fires in the territory of Yakutia, Mordovia, Nizhny Novgorod and Tyumen regions.

Within the framework of the state defense order, industrial enterprises plan to supply more than 600 units of engineering weapons this year – modern engineering reconnaissance, field water supply, fortifications, concealment and imitation, as well as means of overcoming water barriers, minefields, destruction and obstacles, including including the Uran-6 and Uran-14 robotic systems, sapper protection equipment, remote mining engineering equipment, integrated water treatment systems, pontoon parks, towing motor boats, front loaders, electrical equipment of various capacities, military cranes and excavators.

Last year, 12 state-of-the-art engineering weapons were accepted for supply, including a portable diving mine detector MIV-3, a set of mechanized installation of gabions, a complex for obtaining water from snow and ice UPVS-5, etc. The development of domestic engineering weapons is carried out taking into account the maintenance parity or superiority over foreign counterparts.

At the moment, the composition of the engineering troops is constantly increasing, the organizational and staffing structures of engineering formations, units and subunits are being improved, and re-equipment is underway with the latest and modernized engineering weapons.
